Training on the DAMEN RSD-E 2513 Volta 1

The maritime industry is rapidly moving towards more sustainable operations. A good example of this development is the fully electric Damen RSD-E 2513 Volta 1, operating in the port of Antwerp.

Developed by Damen, this innovative tug represents the next generation of harbour tugboats with fully electric propulsion and advanced onboard systems.

During my time in Port of Antwerp, I provided practical onboard training on the new POA fleet. The focus of the training was to support the crew in operating this modern (electric) tug safely and efficiently.

Damen 3010ICE ASD – Seatrail, Delivery & Crew Training

This newly built Damen ASD 3010ICE tug was completed at
Damen Shipyards in Gorinchem. I was involved in the sea trial process, ensuring the vessel performed to specification before successful handover to the client.

Following by the delivery to the client.
On location Bob and I spent two weeks providing familiarization and hands-on training to the new crew. This helped ensure a smooth, safe, and confident start to operations.

I wish the crew all the best and safe miles!

Maritime Simulator Training for Rijkswaterstaat at MARIN

At the simulator training facilities of MARIN, I provided Ship Handling Training for professionals from Rijkswaterstaat (RWS).

Using MARIN’s new maritime simulator centre, I trained a group of four RWS participants in vessel maneuvering and thruster control in realistic scenarios. The training focused on improving ship handling skills, situational awareness, and operational decision-making.

This session was the fifth and final group. The last 2,5 years we preformed simulator and practiacal onboard training program for RWS personnel. the crew inproved skill and awareness with thruster experience.

Mare Luna, Makkum – Leeuwarden

The Mare Luna is a hotel vessel available for short-term rental contracts, offering flexible accommodation on the water.

Two months ago, I had the pleasure of sailing the Mare Luna from Leeuwarden to Makkum Feadship at the start of a temporary contract. With the assignment now complete, the vessel is making her way back to Leeuwarden.

The journey offered a beautiful mix of inland waterways and a short leg at sea, passing through the scenic landscapes of Friesland — always a pleasure to navigate.

Onboard Training RSD2513— Port of Antwerp

A new round of onboard training at the PoAB, taking place aboard the Damen RSD2513 “Tug 50.”

Following their simulator sessions, the trainees are now engaged in hands-on training through day-to-day port operations.

Each trainee captain is supported by an experienced trainer, ensuring they develop their skills in a safe, structured, and highly practical environment.

This approach allows us to support the trainees in the best possible way — combining on-the-job learning with a strong focus on safe and efficient sailing.

While they are seasoned captains, this type of tug is new to them. Our role is to provide support wherever it’s needed to ensure a safe and confident transition.

**Super Yacht Lady Esther – Sea Trial After Refit**

Recently the Lady Esther underwent a complete refit, including a significant extension of her length. This extensive project took two years and was carried out at the Damen Maaskant shipyard in Stellendam, the Netherlands.

Following the completion of the refit, a second sea trial was required. My colleague Danny asked me to take part in this phase of the project.

As you can see from the photos, we experienced heavy fog during all three days of the trial. While it presented some navigational challenges,
the fog also created a unique and atmospheric backdrop for the photos. The trail was a succes.

Seatrials of the Damen OPV2600 Patrol Vessel

The OPV2600 patrol vessel, proudly built at the Galati Damen shipyard in Romania, was recently prepared for its sea trials. The journey began along the iconic Danube River, heading toward the Black Sea for a full suite of performance and maneuverability tests.

Sea trials included speed tests, turning circles, crash stops, and a series of complex maneuvering exercises designed to push the vessel to its limits. Onboard RHIBs were also thoroughly tested to ensure deployment systems and handling met operational requirements.

Weather conditions were favorable — chilly temperatures, but calm seas. Despite the cold, the crew’s adrenaline was high, and the excitement was palpable. A successful start to what promises to be a capable and reliable asset at sea.

ASD 2813 Tug Training – Ghana Ports Authority

The Ghana Ports Authority ordered two new ASD2813 tugs. To ensure the crew was well-prepared in advance, a small group of local captains traveled to Gorinchem, the Netherlands, for an intensive two-week tug handling training course on the simulator.

After completing the training, I accompanied the Ghanaian captains back to Ghana, where the new tugs had just arrived in Tema Port from the
Damen Shipyard at Vietnam.

Together with engineer Michael, we conducted a two-week familiarization program for a large crew of nearly 30 people, covering both theoretical and practical aspects to ensure a safe and efficient start of operations.

During the weekends, Michael and I had the chance to explore the area a bit.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and the great time in Ghana!

Fairplay 91 in Hamburg – Two-Day Support Visit

I made a two-day visit to Hamburg, Germany, to support operations on the Fairplay 91.

Some issues had been reported during operation, and Damen requested my assistance to reproduce the problems, collect data, and support the troubleshooting process.

It was great to talk to the “Captain colleagues” in Hamburg and and contribute to resolving the situation on site.

Familiarization of New ASD 2312 Tugs – Dubai, UAE

Dubai was on the schedule — right in the middle of summer, with temperatures reaching up to 43°C.

I was asked to carry out familiarization for two newly delivered ASD 2312 tugs, “Mihaiz” and “Al Wasl 3”. The local crew was enthusiastic about the new vessels and eager to learn. On the final day, we even performed some live towing operations as part of the training.

A third, similar tug had also been delivered to DryDocks World, a separate company in Dubai. They too required familiarization, so i was able to support both clients during the same visit — two birds with one stone.

Fortunately, there was also a bit of time for sightseeing. The local manager kindly gave me a tour of the Damen Sharjah Shipyard, which was a great opportunity to see more of Damen’s operations in the region.

Despite the heat, it was a rewarding and enjoyable project to be part of.
